Ofmega Mundial (2nd style)

As with all things Ofmega, concrete information is hard to find - and so you come across different people giving this derailleur different names. I remember it as being introduced after the Ofmega Mistral as part of the cheaper Ofmega Mundial groupset - so I have always thought that it was called the Ofmega Mundial.

It is certainly a simpler, more cheaply made and, undeniably, uglier version of the Mistral.

The Mundial does share many features of the final iteration of the Mistral:

  • It has short (42mm) parallelogram arms.
  • The b-knuckle has 'buttresses' on the b-pivot stop.
  • It has a fixed cable stop.
  • The pulley wheels have long teeth and polished dust covers.
  • On the short cage versions, the inner pulley cage plate is crudely stamped and vaguely polished.
But there are also numerous differences, including:

  • It is, regrettably, only available in black.
  • The b-knuckle wraps all the way around the head of the b-pivot bolt. I mention this because it would have been easy to reuse the Mistral's mould for this part - but this was clearly not done
  • The logo is cast into the outer parallelogram plate. This also required a new mould - but at least this solved a known problem with the Mistral - that of the printed logo wearing off.
  • The p-knuckle follows the, then new, fashion for of having no visible p-pivot bolt.
  • The Mundial is only ever seen with a steel b-pivot bolt. No luxurious aluminium version appeared.
  • The outer pulley cage plate is steel, and the quality of the plating of all the steel parts is not up to that on the Mistral.

And speaking of steel pulley cage plates and nasty plating, both of these betray the fact that the Mundial was manufactured by Simplex.

A brave but futile attempt to bring designer lunacy to the masses.

I am aware of three variants of the Mundial:

  • An early, short cage, version, which has a cable routing identical to a Mistral, and has the pulley cage pivot 'locked' into the p-knuckle with a steel pin (you have to look carefully at the additional photos to see this).
  • This, slightly incongruous, long cage 'Mountain Bike' version, which is identical to the first version, except that it uses Simplex's all steel 87mm pulley cage.
  • A later, short cage, version, which has an ugly lump molded onto the b-knuckle to give Simplex's 'improved' cable routing. This version also has the pulley cage pivot 'snapped' into the p-knuckle, without a steel pin, using only the grip of the flexible plastic.
